When I was a kid, I remember Mother’s Day as a “card-and-flower-hug-and-kiss-the-end” event. It’s not that Mother’s Day wasn’t important, its just that it was something we didn’t make a big deal about. And now that I am a mother, its kind of the same thing. I know, without a doubt, I will get a quirky card lovingly scribbled on by my girls, and maybe even a bouquet of flowers picked up from the grocery store. And then the day will go on as normal.
The other day I was thinking about all the work that mother’s do that is “behind the scenes”. The things that mothers just take care of, and no one notices. The cleaning, the chauffeuring, the scheduling, the comforting, the wiping off the counters, and taking out the trash. The things that magically get taken care of without anyone ever knowing. I’m sure the “things” vary from house to house, but without a doubt, I can guarantee that every mother does things that are taken for granted, that never get mentioned or thanked. And for this reason, I think, its important to recognize how wonderful our Mothers are, and to take a moment to truly thank them, if only on one day a year.
I love personalized gifts. Gifts that are bought with a specific person in mind, with thought and purposefulness. More than just some smelly lotion or a bouquet of flowers that were purchased last minute, but truly putting thought into what you are giving someone to help convey what they mean to you. This is one of the reasons why I love Christmas, the joy of being able to give that one perfect gift to someone! If you haven’t checked it out before, I highly recommend the site Uncommon Goods.
Uncommon Goods is a privately owned business that specializes in unique and handcrafted gifts. This site is so me. Not only do they offer specialty gifts for dog lovers, kitchen geeks, new-moms and cool kids but they also support artists and designers, animal and planet friendly and recycled products! Did you know that with every single purchase you make you can donate $1 to the non-profit of your choice? Since they started the Better to Give program 12 years ago, they have donated over $700,00 to charities around the world! This is the kind of business to support – one that supports not only local artists, products made in the USA, and products made ethically, but also gives back to the world we all call home.
The site is broken down into tons of categories, so not only can you browse through by recipient, interest, price, and many categories, but they also have lists curated for special occasions. To check out gift ideas they have just for Mother’s Day, please browse this link and this one (but not yet, I want you to see what I’ve picked, first!). I was allowed to pick a few things to review and I honestly had such a hard time choosing. I was drawn to a lot of the art and jewelry, but I wanted to give you the most bang for my buck (haha) and review the items that interested me the most, but also let me review as many products as I could.
The first item I chose was this really cool Chai Tea Kit! I love chai tea, and love how each variety can taste so different. So the second I saw this it went into my shopping cart. Featuring organic and fair-trade certified Ceylon tea, this kit also comes with cardamom pods, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and star anise, just perfect for creating your own signature cup! Brew Your Perfect Cup Here!
For a long time now I have wanted to try some different, fancy salts. This seemed like the perfect opportunity! Uncommon Goods actually has 5 different sets of salts (and so many more awesome food and drink gifts, I really wanted them ALL
I also somehow got talked into this awesome Aquafarm. Something about three sets of batting eyelashes (Yes, Joel joined in) about the prospect of getting a fish combined with the possibilities of growing my own herbs (which I’ve wanted to do forever now) and not having to clean a tank kind of sold me. I still can’t believe we now have a fish. But I am excited that his little fishy poop can fertilize my herbs. Aquaponics are cool. Ladybug decided to name our little Beta “Owen”. We are planning on getting him a little snail friend, as well as a hidey hole log and a real plant to go inside, but we wanted to wait for Daddy to get off work so we could all pick them out together. This tank was a breeze to set up, it took me about 30 minutes total. We let it run for 2 full days before we added the fish in. Our seeds haven’t started to grow yet, but I will let you know as soon as they start! Get Yours Here and check out other cool gifts for the home here. (by the way, do you know how hard it is to take a picture of an aquarium? Not as simple as one might think!)
You should all know by now how big of nerds we actually are. And we are totally proud of it. So when Joel and I saw these glasses, we knew, without speaking, that we had to have them! We have been enjoying making Whiskey Sours and Old Fashions some nights, but our “bar” definitely lacks in glassware. Somehow “adult” drinks just aren’t the same when sipped from a cup with Frozen’s Olaf on it. And to see more Kitchen/Cooking gifts please click here. You can tell these glasses are great quality – they are are a nice weight and thickness – definitely not cheap glass. And the lettering is actually etched into the glass, not printed on it. Plus, dishwasher safe! Hello!
I hope this Mother’s Day you can take a moment or two to hug your Mama, Aunt, Grandma, and any woman who has had a hand in your life. The connections that we have, the relationships we cultivate, are so important to who we become!
Happy Mother’s Day!
