If there are two things I love, its promoting small businesses and supporting fellow Iowans. And baked goods. Ok, that’s three things, but in this case it just so happens they all are wrapped up together in one nice little package! And that package was delivered to my doorstep. And I ate it.
Sweet Freedom Gluten Free Bakery is owned by Chantal, who refused to give up her baked goods after needing to switch to a gluten free diet. She started bringing her baked goods everywhere she went and everyone loved them. One thing led to another, and in 2014 she opened up her very own bakery in New Hampton, Iowa. You can find these baked goods sold at the Magpie Coffee House in Decorah, Iowa, at Hy-Vee in Charles City, Iowa and Waterloo, Iowa, the Faraway Stores in New Hampton, the Cottonwood Canyon Coffee in Waterloo, Stolen Brothers BBQ in West Union, and The Blue Iris in New Hampton. BUT if that isn’t enough, you can also take advantage of SpeeDee Delivery service and have these delivered to your doorstep throughout the midwest! And who doesn’t love cupcakes on their doorstep?
Chantal sent me a fantastic selection of cupcakes and breads to try! I received a loaf of gluten free bread, 3 gluten free hamburger buns (a plain, a garlic herb and an onion), a cinnamon roll, and 4 cupcakes – Vanilla Heaven, Salted Caramel, Just Chocolate, and Blueberry Cinnamon Coffee Cake.
You might be thinking – ‘Why Jenni, you aren’t gluten free! What could you possibly know about gluten free baked items?!’ And you are right – I am a giant fan of gluten in all forms. However, I do have several friends and family members who are gluten free, and we even had Munchkin on a gluten free diet for a few weeks this past fall. I have eaten my fair share of gluten free baked goods. Most of the time, I think its better to just eliminate baked goods entirely rather than suffer with poor substitutions. But occasionally you find some real gems, and I am so excited to share these amazing cupcakes with you!
The gluten free hamburger buns and bread were tried, but my girls felt the textural differences were just too noticeable (so says a 5 and 2 year old). Because they are the major bread eaters in our house, we ended up giving the bread and hamburger buns to a gluten free friend of mine and she loved them! Normally my friend Julie doesn’t eat any gluten free baked goods because they just aren’t as good, but she was super impressed with these gluten free breads. They both had great flavor and texture, and she gave them two thumbs up!
The cupcakes we totally kept (and scarfed down) for ourselves. Seriously, we could not tell they were gluten free. At. All. Our favorites were the Just Chocolate and the Blueberry Cinnamon Coffee Cake. They were soft, moist, and super flavorful, with perfect texture. They were literally everything you would want in a cupcake! We might have fought over them, they were just so good. If you are in the midwest, gluten free, and looking for some great cupcakes and breads, check out Sweet Freedoms Gluten Free Bakery!
