Apple Cranberry Crisp Recipe with Crispy Walnut Topping
This apple cranberry crisp combines sweet apples and tart cranberries under a golden oat topping. A simple, cozy fall dessert you can make ahead.

This apple cranberry crisp is one of those desserts that feels cozy without trying too hard.
Sweet, tender apples bake down with tart cranberries, and everything gets tucked under a buttery oat and walnut topping that turns golden and crisp in the oven. It’s simple. It’s reliable. And it doesn’t need pumpkin spice to feel like fall.
I especially love this combination because cranberries add just enough brightness to balance the sweetness of the apples. It’s a small shift from a traditional apple crisp, but not so different that it feels unfamiliar.
If you’re trying to gently expand what shows up at the table, this is a great place to start.
Why this recipe fits into real life:
- A gentle twist on a classic – This is still an apple crisp at heart – warm apples, buttery topping, familiar comfort. The cranberries add brightness without making it feel “different” in a scary way, which makes it an easy win for kids and cautious eaters.
- Easy to make ahead – You can bake it fully in advance and reheat before serving, which makes it perfect for holidays, gatherings, or just planning ahead during a busy week. It’s low-stress entertaining food.
- Adds variety without extra work – If you’re trying to slowly expand your family’s flavor comfort zone, this is a great place to practice. One small change (cranberries!) layered into something familiar builds confidence without creating resistance.

How to make apple crisp with cranberries
This is a straightforward, mix-and-bake dessert. For the full set of written directions, please scroll down to the recipe card below.
Toss sliced apples and fresh cranberries with sugar, flour, vanilla, orange juice, and zest, then spread the mixture into a buttered baking dish.
In a separate bowl, mix together the oat and walnut topping until it forms coarse crumbles with the butter evenly distributed. Sprinkle it over the fruit and bake until the topping is golden and the filling is bubbling around the edges.
Let it rest for about 15 minutes before serving so the juices can settle slightly.
That’s it.
I even had the chance to make this recipe on the local news one fall! It’s always fun sharing simple seasonal recipes that feel special without being complicated. You can watch that segment here if you’d like to see it come together in real time.
Choosing the best apples for a good crisp:
For the best texture, use apples that hold their shape while baking. Varieties like Pink Lady, Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Jonagold work especially well because they stay tender without turning mushy.
If you like a sweeter crisp, lean toward Honeycrisp or Pink Lady. For more tart contrast with the cranberries, Granny Smith is a great choice.
Making this recipe ahead of time:
This is a great recipe to make ahead of time, and it reheats beautifully, too.
Bake the crisp completely, let it cool, then store it covered in the refrigerator for up to two days. Reheat in a 350°F oven until warmed through and crisp on top.
Serving:
This crisp is delicious warm from the oven, at room temperature, or straight from the fridge the next day.
Serve it on its own, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, or spooned over yogurt for a cozy breakfast treat.
There’s no wrong way.
Storing leftovers
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
To reheat, warm in a 350°F oven for 15–20 minutes. You can microwave individual portions, but the topping won’t stay quite as crisp.
