Cocoa always seems like a special drink, doesn’t it? This version is so fun and simple! We start off with warmed milk, and then add on a cocoa flavored whipped cream on top.

It looks so cool and creamy, and when you stir in the chocolate whipped cream into the warm milk, it makes a really rich cup of cocoa!

Ingredients Needed:

You only need four simple ingredients to make this great drink:

  • Hot Cocoa Mix – This is the star of the recipe! Any cocoa mix will do, but you want one with a nice powder to it so it blends in well.
  • Powdered Sugar – Just a touch will sweeten things up nicely. We use powdered instead of granulated so it blends in easier.
  • Heavy Whipping Cream – You want a good quality, fresh heavy cream! Make sure its nice and cold before you start to whip it. Do not substitute cool whip.
  • Milk – You can use any milk you like, but I find that whole milk makes the best rich and creamy cocoa.

How to make this drink

This recipe is so easy to make, that the kids can definitely get in on making it with you! For the full set of directions, make sure you scroll down to the recipe card below:

*Skip the boxed stuff and make a truly great homemade hot cocoa mix recipe..

  1. In a large mixing bowl, add the heavy cream, hot cocoa mix, and powdered sugar.
  2. Use an electric hand mixer (affiliate link) to beat on high until stiff peaks form.
  3. Transfer the chocolate whipped cream to a large ziplock bag. (Optionally, you can skip this step and just spoon the whipped cream on top of the milk, but it doesn’t look as fancy that way.)
  4. Fill your mugs ¾ high with warm milk (you can warm it on the stovetop or in the microwave for 90 seconds).
  5. Snip the tip off one of the corners of the ziptop bag and pipe the cocoa flavored whipped cream on top of the warm milk.
  6. Top with chocolate sprinkles, mini marshmallows, crushed peppermint candies or all the above!
  7. Serve immediately, and the drinkers can stir in the whipped chocolate into the milk before drinking it.

Whipped Cream Tip: Whipped cream is so much easier to make when you start with everything really cold! Place your mixing bowl and electric beaters into the freezer for about 10 minutes before you start this recipe to ensure they are super cold.

Storage information

This is best when made and served fresh. The whipped cream can start to break down when stored in the fridge, so I don’t recommend making a big batch and saving it.

Serving Options

Yes! You can serve this chocolate whipped cream on top of cold white or chocolate milk as well!

Kids in the kitchen: How your kids can help you cook

This cocoa is so easy, kids can get behind all the steps!

  • Kids aged 1-3 can help you measure out ingredients, assist you in holding the hand mixer, and sprinkle toppings onto the cocoa.
  • Kids aged 4-6 can do everything above plus help make the cocoa flavored whipped cream, and help pipe the cream on top of the milk.
  • Kids aged 7-10+ can help you do everything above, plus help you warm the milk.

*Please note that these recommendations are generalized, and to please use your personal discretion with your child’s skill level. And always, always supervise! Read more about how to have your children help you in the kitchen.
