January is a month that is typically dark and cold, so plan some meals that will warm your spirit and your tummies!
I know that planning food for a whole month can seem like a daunting task. With busy schedules, it’s easy to rely on the same meals time and time again and then get stuck in this loop of eating the same thing every single week. It’s easy to feel hungry for something different.
It’s my mission to help families enjoy a variety of meals throughout the month easily and effortlessly, without being bored by the same old thing all the time. Just because you have kids and a busy schedule doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy delicious food!
This month is all about comfort food! Think of the month like an edible hygge menu – how can you add comfort and coziness into your family’s meal plan?
January is National Soup Month!
January is a perfect time to enjoy warm comforting soups! Try some of my family’s favorite easy and delicious soups this month!
- Irish Potato Soup is the #1 fan favorite here on The Gingered Whisk, so if you haven’t tried that yet, you need to!
- Instant Pot Turkey Noodle Soup is easy and comforting and a great way to use leftovers (you can also use rotisserie chicken in this recipe!)
- Greek Lemon Chicken Soup is an easy and flavorful meal
- Pork Posole is one of my favorite soups – its easy and delicious with a variety of fun toppings.
See all my soup recipes in the recipe index. For extra points, read this cute book called “Everybody serves soup” by Norah Dooley. Its a great story about a little girl who learns all about different soups her neighbors are making, with recipes included!
Fun food related days in January
- Jan 4 – National Spaghetti Day – Make this night east on yourself and use your favorite brands of store-bought sauce and frozen meatballs. Add a salad and some garlic bread and you have a no-fuss meal that requires no brain power.
- Jan 13 – National Korean American Day – try your hand at making something from Korea like my Beef Bulgogi Bowls
- Jan 28 – Blueberry Pancake Day – Make your favorite pancakes for dinner and toss some blueberries in them for a fun treat!
Cozy and comforting recipes for January
Here are some other easy ways you can add some extra coziness into your meals:
- Make homemade hot cocoa! Ditch the little envelopes of powder and try making it from scratch. This Spanish hot chocolate is so rich and creamy you will never want anything else.
- For me, breakfast is always cozy! Try a breakfast for dinner night with these puff pastry quiches and some fruit.
- Bake bread from scratch. I mean, is there anything more lovely that the smell of fresh baked bread? Besides eating it, of course! I have a whole bunch of homemade bread recipes, but I think you should try English muffin bread!
- There’s something comforting and cozy about a finger food night. Whether you do an indoor picnic or a movie night, try making a big kid friendly charcuterie board with all the finger foods and cuddle up together to snack!
