How to make horchata at home
This recipe is so simple to make and is great to make with kids! Here’s a brief overview so you know what to expect, but please scroll down to the recipe card below for specific instructions and ingredient amounts.
Step One: Soak the rice
Combine the jasmine rice, hot water, and cinnamon sticks in a large bowl. Cover and allow the rice to soak for 8-12 hours.
Step Two: Blend until smooth
Pour the rice, water, and cinnamons ticks directly from the bowl into the blender and blend until everything has been completely broken down into tiny pieces. Use a fine mesh strainer (affiliate link) to remove solid pieces that remain.
Step Three: Mix
Add in the additional cold water, both kinds of ilk, and vanilla and stir until combined. Chill until yuo ready to serve. The drink will settle a little as it sits in the fridge, so give it a good stir before serving. Serve over ice with a sprinkle of cinnamon on top!
Serving suggestions:
Serve this chilled over ice with a sprinkle of cinnamon ton top for the ultimate refresher. You can also pair it with tacos, enchiladas, or even a dessert for a flavorful drink that ties the whole meal together.
Recipe Tips:
- For extra creaminess, add ¼ to ½ cup sliced almonds with the rice before soaking
- Rinsing the rice before you make this recipe is optional. I have tried it both ways and don’t see much of a difference with texture.
How kids can help in the kitchen
The simple steps to this recipe care great for every age level to help with. Little ones can help measure rice, sprinkle cinnamon stocks, or pour water into the blender. Older kids can learn how to safely use the blender, practicing straining, and stir in the milk at the end.
This recipe is also a wonderful way to encourage kids to explore new flavors. The combination of rice, cinnamon and sweetened milk is both familiar and exciting, helping them build confidence in trying something from a different food tradition.
As you make horchata together, talk about where the drink comes from and how its enjoying in Mexican and Central American cuisine. Cooking becomes not just about making a delicious drink, but also about learning more about the world and the people who live in it.
