Because there are so few ingredients in frozen hot chocolate, you want to make sure you use great quality – a really nice hot cocoa mix and dairy products that are fresh! AE Dairy has ridiculously high standards when it comes to the freshness and quality of their products, so its what I always turn to!
I like using a 2% milk in this recipe because it offers a great balance of texture and richness without being too much. You could use whole milk if you wanted in this recipe, but I found it was almost too much. And using a 1% skim milk didn’t offer the richness that this decadent recipe deserves.
How to make this frozen treat
This recipe is simple to make! For the full set of directions, please scroll down to the recipe card below. This is just a general overview on how to make it to help you plan.
- In the jar of a blender, combine the milk, hot cocoa mix, and ice, in that order.
- Place the lid on the blender jar and blend until there are no more ice chunks and everything is smooth.
- Pour evenly into glasses and top with whipped cream. I also like to shave a little chocolate on top for fun, but you can also use chocolate sprinkles or mini chocolate chips.
- Serve immediately!
Recipe Note: As much as I love homemade hot cocoa mix, I actually prefer the taste of prepackaged packets of cocoa mix in this recipe.
