Thank you to AE Dairy for sponsoring this post. And Thank You for supporting the brands that support me and allow me to continue to grow my site. All opinions, recipes and photographs are my own.

Because there are so few ingredients in frozen hot chocolate, you want to make sure you use great quality – a really nice hot cocoa mix and dairy products that are fresh! AE Dairy has ridiculously high standards when it comes to the freshness and quality of their products, so its what I always turn to!

I like using a 2% milk in this recipe because it offers a great balance of texture and richness without being too much. You could use whole milk if you wanted in this recipe, but I found it was almost too much. And using a 1% skim milk didn’t offer the richness that this decadent recipe deserves.

How to make this frozen treat

This recipe is very simple to make! Here is a brief overview of the recipe to give you an idea of how it works. For the full set of directions and measurements, please make sure you scroll down to the recipe card below!

  1. In the jar of a blender, combine the milk, hot cocoa mix, and ice, in that order.
  2. Place the lid on the blender jar and blend until there are no more ice chunks and everything is smooth.
  3. Pour evenly into glasses and top with whipped cream. I also like to shave a little chocolate on top for fun, but you can also use chocolate sprinkles or mini chocolate chips.
  4. Enjoy!

Recipe Note: As much as I love homemade hot cocoa mix, I actually prefer the taste of prepackaged packets of cocoa mix in this recipe.

Kids in the kitchen: How your kids can help you cook

Inviting our kids into the kitchen with us is a great way to help them be more confident and curious about the foods they eat.

This frozen hot chocolate is a great recipe for kids to help with because it’s great for measuring and pouring different kinds of ingredients, learning to use a blender safely, and decorating or garnishing a finished recipe.

  • Kids aged 1-3 can help you measure and pour the milk and ice, as well as garnish the drink.
  • Kids aged 4-6 can do everything above plus learn how to use the blender with supervision, and pour the finished drink into glasses.
  • Kids aged 7-10+ can help you do everything above.

*Please note that these recommendations are generalized, and to please use your personal discretion with your child’s skill level. And always, always supervise! Read more about how to have your children help you in the kitchen.
