How to make homemade hummus

This recipe is very simple to make! Here is a brief overview of the recipe to give you an idea of how it works. For the full set of directions and measurements, please make sure you scroll down to the recipe card below!

Prepare the chickpeas.

This step helps hummus be extra smooth and creamy, so don’t skip it!

  • Drain the chickpeas and rinse in water.
  • Place the chickpeas in a medium sized saucepan and cover with fresh water.
  • Place on the stovetop, bring to a simmer for 20 minutes.
  • Add in the baking soda and allow it to sit for 10 minutes. 
  • Place the chickpeas in a strainer and rinse under cold water. No need to peel the chickpeas!

Make the hummus.

  • Place the lemon juice, garlic, and salt in the food processor and blend until it is almost. Allow the mixture to sit for about 5 minutes to let the garlic mellow in the lemon juice.
  • Add the tahini sauce to the food processor and blend until the mixture is smooth and creamy, about 5 minutes. Scrape down the sides if needed and continue blending to make it all the same texture.
  • Add in the cooked chickpeas and 2 ice cubes, and blend until the mixture is super smooth.
  • Transfer to a storage container and place in the fridge for 1 hour to allow the flavors to blend together well.

Storage Information

This hummus stores really well! Keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week.

This hummus is so good in so many different ways. Here are some serving suggestions

Hummus recipe variations

This recipe is the perfect basic hummus recipe, and it’s easy to change things up to make different flavored variations. Try one of these combinations:

  • Spices. Add in ½ teaspoon of ground cumin and/or ground coriander
  • Roasted Red Peppers. Add in 1 roasted red pepper and ½ teaspoon of smoked paprika
  • Toasted Pine Nuts. Top with toasted pine nuts after blending.
  • Roasted Garlic. Add in 1 or 2 cloves of roasted garlic to your blender.
  • Sun-dried Tomatoes. Add in ¾ cup of oil packed sun dried tomatoes to the blender.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to peel the chickpeas?

Not for this recipe! Because we cooked the chickpeas until very soft and gave them a baking soda bath, the skins break down and blend up nicely.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups chickpeas drained and rinsed

  • 4 ice cubes
